Doctoral/Post-Doctoral Stipend in Assyriology
The interdisciplinary research project “Materiality and Practice: Cultural Entanglements of 2nd Millennium BC East Mediterranean Societies” within the Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe in a Global Context. Shifting Asymmetries in Cultural Flows” (http://www.vjc.uni-hd.de) at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg is inviting applications for a Doctoral/Post-Doctoral Stipend in Assyriology.
Within the broader topical and methodological framework of the research project, the successful candidate will carry out independent and original research focusing on the material components (e. g., containers, figurative representations, permanent or temporary installations) of cultic practices in the domestic and public domains as evidenced in cuneiform sources from the 2nd millennium BC. Special emphasis will be laid on the description and interpretation of processes of artifact transfer, appropriation, transformation, and re-contextualization brought about by trans-regional or cross-cultural exchange. While based on the philological analysis of cuneiform sources, the resulting study will be informed substantially by both the pertinent archaeological evidence as well as recent theoretical approaches to the concept of materiality in the social and cultural sciences.
The stipend is 1000 € per month and will be awarded for 20 months with possible renewal for an additional year after a successful review of the first term. Applicants for a doctoral stipend are expected to hold an outstanding university degree in Assyriology/Sumerology, applicants for a post-doctoral stipend a doctoral degree in Assyriology/Sumerology far above average. Willingness to engage in joint activities of the interdisciplinary research project as well as good English language proficiency are highly desirable.
In addition to a curriculum vitae, a list of publications (if applicable), copies of academic degree certificates, and one letter of recommendation, applicants should submit a one-page exposé in accordance with the research program outlined above.
