Research Associate (TV-L 13) in Assyriology

The interdisciplinary research project “Medical Systems in Transition: The Case of the Ancient Near East” within the Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe in a Global Context. Shifting Asymmetries in Cultural Flows” ( at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg is inviting applications for a

Research Associate [Wissenschaftliche(r) Mitarbeiter(in) TV-L 13] in Assyriology.

Within the broader topical framework of the research project, the successful candidate will carry out independent and original research focusing on cuneiform medical texts from the second and first millennium BC. While primarily based on the philological analysis of cuneiform sources, special emphasis will be laid on the relation of healing systems to shifting political constellations. In particular it will be investigated to which extent the waxing and waning popularity of Ancient Near Eastern healing systems was related to their association with imperial and other powers on the one hand, and the therapeutic efficacy on the other.

The initial appointment is for two years with possible renewal for a third year after a successful review of the first term. Applicants are expected to hold a doctoral degree in Assyriology far above average. Willingness to engage in joint activities of the interdisciplinary research project as well as good English language proficiency are highly desirable.

In addition to a curriculum vitae, a list of publications (if applicable), copies of academic degree certificates, and one letter of recommendation, applicants should submit a one-page exposé in accordance with the research program outlined above.

Please direct your application by April 30, 2008 to:

Seminar für Sprachen und Kulturen des Vorderen Orients – Assyriologie

(D-)69117 Heidelberg
