THE GEOGRAPHY OF KNOWLEDGE IN ASSYRIA AND BABYLONIA: A DIACHRONIC ANALYSIS OF FOUR SCHOLARLY LIBRARIES
http://cdl.museum.upenn.edu/gkab/

GKAB is a 5-year research project funded by the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council, based at the Department of History and Philosophy of Science, University of Cambridge, and the Babylonian Section, University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. It began on 1 September 2007 and will run until 31 August 2012.

We plan to undertake a comparative study of four scholarly libraries: the Neo-Assyrian temple library of Nabu in Nimrud/Kalhu (CTN 4) and the library from Sultantepe/Huzirina near Harran (STT 1 & 2), both of which were destroyed c.612 BCE; one from a private house from area Ue 18 in Uruk, c.450-300 BCE (SpTU 1-5), and another from the Resh temple, c.200 BCE (BaM Beih 10 and others).

We will use open, standards-based encoding to create the Corpus of Ancient Mesopotamian Scholarship http://cdl.museum.upenn.edu/cams/. This freely available, online corpus of manuscripts (tablets), compositions (composite texts), translations, and bibliography follows Cuneiform Digital Library http://cdl.museum.upenn.edu/doc/ and CDLI http://cdli.ucla.edu/ specifications. We will also make quantitative analyses of their linguistic and orthographic features to look for small-scale and large-scale geographical and diachronic change. We will use methodology from the history of science to explain those continuities, changes, and idiosyncracies in relation to the social, intellectual, and political contexts in which the scholars were working.

The project team comprises:

* Philippe Clancier <pc374@cam.ac.uk>
* Graham Cunningham <gc379@cam.ac.uk>
* Ruth Horry <rah54@cam.ac.uk>
* Frances Reynolds <fr263@cam.ac.uk> and <frances.reynolds@orinst.ox.ac.uk>
* Eleanor Robson <er264@cam.ac.uk>
* Steve Tinney <stinney@sas.upenn.edu>

Please update your email address book accordingly. The project’s email address is <gkab@groups.caret.cam.ac.uk>.
