Hello to the forum,

I have recently uptaken my sumerian, and came across some questions which I sent to the ANE-2-list as I actually have no access to most of the assyriological journals:

1. What is the "state of the art" reading URU? I know that the reading iri comes from Proto-Ea, Nr. 538, and I remember this reading (or ere) as valid until oB times.
Is the reading uru stil valid for later times, for instance as determinative in akkadian texts? Or should I alter the uru-determinatives into iri?

2. What is the most accepted reading for the name of URU-KA-gina?
I remember Uru?inimgina, but I've met also Iri?enimgina, Irikagina.

3. What ist the "state of the art" in reading e2-TAR-sir2-sir2-ra?
I remember e2-sila-sir2-sir-ra, but I've met also e2-tar-sir2-sir2-ra.

4. What is the state of the art reading (in Sumerian) the Sign /kal/ (kala, kalag, kalga/?
And where comes the reading /rib/ from, nA? The reading /dan/ = dannu (akk) = kal(a)g(a) "strong" is, of course, evident.

There might come more questions as I'm proceeding with recaputulating the texts.

Please answer on-list or off-list.

Thanks for any help,

Dr. Andrea M. Ulshöfer

iri and uru. It is probably best to use the newest fads. That would be iri. Generally speaking, we will probably not know ever how they pronounced what. The current aim of transliterations is to come as close as possible to the presumed pronunciation, which is not a reasonable goal. One should keep in mind that writing and language are two different things. So use iri, but keep watching out for signs that u/i differences may indicate a vowel which is neither, for example /ue/.
